Assignment #1 – “The Rock”
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson needs your help. He knows that you just learned the basics of Excel and would like for you to help him calculate the money he has earned on several of his movies. Just follow the steps below and you’ll have an answer for The Rock in no time:
Remember: You can always go back to the Introductory CISM 2201 videos or the GCF Global videos if you need a bit of help.
STEP #1: In cell A1, type in the following heading, “Dwayne Johnson’s Compensation”.
STEP #2: On row 2, type the following subheadings (one per cell): “Movie”, “Year”, “Domestic Gross”, “Cost of Production”, “Gross Profit”, and “Rock’s Reward”.
STEP #3: Input the following records under the appropriate subheadings:
Movie Year Domestic Gross Cost of Production
Jumanji 2017 404500000 120000000
Fast and Furious 6 2013 238600000 110000000
Get Smart 2018 130300000 75000000
Central Intelligence 2016 127000000 80000000
The Game Plan 2007 90600000 54000000
Rampage 2018 425100000 140000000
Race to Witch Mountain 2009 67000000 32000000
Skyscraper 2018 68400000 62000000
Tooth Fairy 2010 60200000 35000000
Baywatch 2017 58000000 57000000
STEP #4: Once you have entered the data in the table above, skip one row in the spreadsheet and enter, “Royalty Rate” in Column A and “.02” in Column B.
STEP #5: Using the Autofit Column Width command, adjust the columns.
STEP #6: Format all numbers so that they have both “$” signs preceding the amount and 1000 dollar comma separator (,).
STEP #7: Put in a formula that will calculate “Gross Profit”. To make this calculation, you subtract the “Cost of Production” from the “Domestic Gross.” Copy the formula to the remaining records.
STEP #8: Put in a formula that will calculate “Rock’s Reward”. To make this calculation, you multiply the “Gross Profit” by the “Royalty Rate” (.02). Note: You will have to use an Absolute Reference for the cell containing .02 so that it remains fixed in the formula. Copy the formula to the remaining records.
STEP #9: Using functions, calculate some summary information related to “Rock’s Reward”. Underneath the data in your spreadsheet, enter the following labels: “Total”, “Average”, “Minimum”, and “Maximum”. Use the appropriate Excel functions to calculate these numbers in the “Rock’s Reward” column.
STEP #10: Finally, make your spreadsheet look professional: At a minimum, (a) Use the “Merge & Center” command to properly center you main heading, (b) bold all headings, (c) made certain all numbers are in an appropriate format, and (d) center the information for any cells containing numbers.
Note: Once you complete STEP #10. Have some fun experimenting with the various format options (e.g., font sizes, font themes, fill colors, font colors, etc.) Make this spreadsheet look like something you would feel comfortable giving to “The Rock.”
