Discuss mechanisms that control neuronal survival during development (the general neurotrophic theory) and in the adult.
Outline recent advances in the field and discuss their significance in the context of previous understanding.
Each essay has a strict limit of 1000 words, including in text references, but not including the reference list at the end. In text references should be in the style of Journal of Neuroscience. You may use diagrams, but only if this adds to the text.
Diagrams designed by yourself are preferred to those cut and pasted from papers. Either way they should be fully referenced. If figures are original, state this in the figure legend (eg. “Original figure created by [your initials or name]”).
If original but inspired by a figure from a paper, that should also be made clear. (eg “Original figure inspired by …..”) Figure legends are not counted in the word count. They should be sufficient to explain the figure but they are not to be used as expansion of the essay.
In each essay you should include discussion of at least 3 separate points which come from 3 original research papers (i.e not review papers) from the last 3 years, 2017-2020. These papers should not be written by the lecturer who set the question.
These 3 points should be discussed in the context of the subject that was covered in the lectures. Your essay should include at least 10 other references, with not more than 4 of these being reviews.
