Durkheim Assignment (Academic Review of Suicide)
Assignment: Emile Durkheim, On Suicide
On Suicide is one of Emile Durkheim’s most influential works. The purpose of this assignment is to help you sharpen your understanding of this book and clarify your thoughts about it as a work of applied sociology.
A literature review is a piece of academic writing demonstrating knowledge and understanding of the academic literature on a specific topic placed in context.
A literature review also includes a critical evaluation of the material; this is why it is called a literature review rather than a literature report
Content
While it is important that you summarize the key ideas expressed in the book, your review should be more than a synopsis of the points made in this work.
You should also analyze the argument presented by Durkheim: What are its strengths? What are its weaknesses? What is its legacy (i.e., its impact on subsequent research on suicide as well as upon efforts to combat this problem)?
You should also reach out to other resources (journal articles accessible through the Sterne library search engines, online sources, etc.). For a project like this you will need a minimum of five sources (peer-reviewed journal articles or books).
Style
Citations and references in your paper should conform to the American Sociological Association style guidelines. .
Proper citations are a must; examples are provided in the style guide.
Grammar counts.
Grammar is important. As an applied sociologist you will frequently be preparing written material. It is imperative that you master the rules of good grammar.
Your report should be typed in an 11 or 12 point font in an easily read typeface like Times New Roman, Calibri, etc. It should be double-spaced.
Length
Your report should be long enough to cover the subject – but no longer. Grading is based upon quality not quantity.
As a rule of thumb this project will probably require at least five pages (1,000 – 1,200 words) excluding cover page and reference pages. Papers must not exceed 10 pages (excluding cover and references pages).
