Figures of speech and figurative language:Analyze how they function in the context of the poem, how they expand your interpretation.

Annabel Lee by Edgar Allan Poe

1. This paper will focus on only one poem and not a combination of poems. As with all essays, this will necessitate a direct, clear thesis statement. For this assignment, consider using what you have determined the message that the speaker is intending to convey for such a thesis statement

2. Within your essay, you may refer to characteristics of poetry identified in class: (e.g. imagery, metaphor, simile, personification, hyperbole, etc). Do not focus on simply one or two stanzas, look at the whole poem. Avoid rhyme and structure, unless you can justify how it works in the context of the poem.

Also recall that “figures of speech” and “figurative language” are umbrella terms, not specific characteristics. Make sure to analyze how they function in the context of the poem, how they expand your interpretation.

3. Make this an original analysis—do not quote or paraphrase the ideas of others as that constitutes plagiarism for this assignment. Seriously.

Biographical information isn’t required, but I won’t frown upon it if you do it. Focus only on the poem itself. Make sure to “show your work” – meaning, clearly explain how/why you came to your conclusions.

4. Lengthwise, you will prepare four pages of text for this assignment: once you hit page four, you’ve hit the minimum requirement, understand?

Use double spacing, Times New Roman, 12 point font, standard 1 inch margins. Your name, class section, due date, and my name in the top left hand corner of the first page. Consult the essay format guidelines in the syllabus.

5. Proofread the final draft extremely carefully for important technical and mechanical errors.
