Taking care of people generally would be performing all care for them whether they could do it themselves or not. Besides nursing this could also be like a parent that cleans, feeds and provides for their children and then when it is time for more independence the parents keep performing the tasks and this does not allow for proper development.
Dorothea Orem’s Self Care Framework focuses on patient’s deliberate actions to meet their own and other’s self-care demands (currentnursing.com 2017). Not allowing a person to perform to their best potential themselves could have consequences. Self-care and dependent care are learned behaviors.
Making a person feel taken care of is a form of compassion but there and ability to perform tasks themselves is lessened. Enabling care usually happens when family or friends want to take care of the person unlike the model that Orem describes. The professional model does not enable or just perform the tasks, it promotes well-being by pushing for independence or the maximal potential of self-care. It is the goal of nurses, therapist and family to have the individual to perform at their maximal potential.
As described in number 5 of the Power Components of the framework, Motivation is important. This must contain goals for self-care that are in accord with its characteristics and meaning for life, healShawn Richardson th and well-being. (Kearney-Nunnery, 2020). An example could be returning to a prior level functioning with own ADLs or just a safer transition regarding the deficit that they now have.
A major assumption of Orem is that people should be reliant and responsible for their own care and others in the family. This can be difficult and is understandable when the patient is incapable of continuous self-care due to a disability, chronic progression of illness or even an acute illness. There are ten Basic conditioning factors listed in the book that further explains this. Each is specific and must be considered. One can do this by guiding others, education and providing support.
