Knowledge management depends on two major categories of knowledge: explicit knowledge and tacit knowledge. Explicit knowledge is codifiable. It can be written down and transferred with little loss of richness. Virtually all of the knowledge captured, stored, and transmitted by IT is explicit. Tacit knowledge is non-codifiable, and its acquisition and transfer require hands-on practice.
Further, tacit knowledge is evidently more significant and more difficult to transfer and learn; and it can only be acquired through learning by doing (OJT). Therefore, from a resource-based view, explicit knowledge captured by IT may be strategically less important. What counts is the hard-to-codify and hard-to-transfer tacit knowledge (Peng, 2014). Additionally this section focuses on an integration-responsiveness framework centered on the pressures for cost reductions and local responsiveness. Further, the section discusses the four strategic choices and the four corresponding organizational structures that MNEs typically adopt (Peng, 2014).
