Key Concept Explanation: Supply chain management is best defined as supply the “systemic, strategic coordination of the traditional business functions and the tactics across these business functions within a particular company and across businesses within the supply chain, for the purposes of improving the long-term performance of the individual companies and the supply chain as a whole” (Mentzer, et. al, 2001). The main key concept required for understanding supply chain management is fundamental understanding of the associated supply chains that could potentially affect the organization of focus. I personally selected the topic of supply chain management for this week’s discussion board post due to the current extreme spike in the cost of lumber products and its effect on the construction supply chains. With this in mind I was hoping that by researching supply chain management I could better understand what is currently occurring and how similar situations in the future within the construction field could be handled.
Comparison: In comparison to the discussion of supply chain management that is included within the textbook, in the research that I conducted I found a far larger focus on “green” supply chain management. While this may have been as I focused my research on construction supply chain management as that is where my initial interest lied, I feel that it is an important topic to understand (for myself at least). One of the most interesting concepts that I was able to find when researching was that green supply chain management warehousing and green production are the highest ranked green practices within the construction industry of Pakistan, which is most certainly not something that was noted within the textbook (Ali, et. al, 2016). This concept, while not currently applied to US firms but could potentially be in the future, shows the potential competitive usage of green practices and specifically the practices that may be the most beneficial. I think that the textbook had a fairly strong discussion of the usage of supply chain management and its strategic implications, but I feel that for myself personally I found far more concepts applicable to my specific field when conducting my own research.
Article Summary: In the article entitled Comparing Linear and Circular Supply Chains: A Case Study From the Construction Industry the authors compare and contrast the performances of traditional and circular production systems (Nasir, et al, 2017). This research is relevant as the construction field is currently shifting to be more and more environmentally conscious. Due to this shift to being more sustainable, practices that improve or simplify existing practices to be more sustainable are vital. To best approach this research the authors utilized a case study approach. This is important to note as it is an effective but narrow approach to the research, so additionally research may be needed in the future to further substantiate points made within this article. Through the case study research conducted, the authors are able to assert that an integration of circular economy principles within sustainable supply chain management can provide clear advantages from an environmental point view (Nasir, et al, 2017). To conclude this article an assessment of potential future research methods are provided, specifically that more environmental indicators should be considered in order to perform a much more robust comparison between a linear and circular supply chain system (Nasir, et al, 2017). What this article means for the construction field is that there is a high level of success when utilizing circular economy principles when managing environmentally conscious supply chain efforts rather than non-circular means.
Biblical Integration: As for the biblical aspect of supply chain management the most applicable verse and concept would be 2 Corinthians 9:10 “He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness”. This verse is applicable as it expresses an example of a supply chain between the sower and all of the other members that assist in the harvest, and the importance of treating the sower well as they are a key asset within the supply chain. Having a biblical viewpoint is vital in order to retain a biblical foundation when working in the business world.
Application: This concept, supply chain management, relates to the business world in a lot of ways. For me specifically I think of how the concept applies to the construction field and the importance of having appropriate means and methods set in place to monitor potential changes and mitigate potential risks associated with all of the materials required. An example of this would be the aforementioned issue with lumber, as many organizations were not anticipating demand and pricing to spike and are now struggling to deal with the consequences of not being aware of the supply chain earlier or having supply chain risk mitigation measures in place.
Annotated Bibliography:
Ali, Y., Saad, T. B., Sabir, M., Muhammad, N., Salman, A., & Zeb, K. (2020). Integration of green supply chain management practices in construction supply chain of CPEC. Management of Environmental Quality: An International Journal.
The purpose of this article is to provide insight into, identify, and rank the green supply chain management (GSCM) practices for implementation in the construction industry of Pakistan (Ali, et. al, 2016). While this research is limited due to the scope, only Pakistan, and by the experts selected for the authors research base, the article provides an interesting concept and approach that could be easily applied to the construction field of the US. What the authors are able to conclude within this article is that green warehousing and green production are the highest ranked GSCM practices within the construction industry of Pakistan (Ali, et. al, 2016).

In this article the authors look to identify the present focuses and discuss the future directions of decision-making in construction supply chain management through systematic literature review and related philosophy (Le, et. al, 2020). From the results of their literature review, the authors propose a construction supply chain management framework to leverage the three main points: the collaborative planning and design with advanced techniques; the lean procurement with BIM and third-party logistics; and the application of Lean and BIM in construction operations and delivery (Le, et. al, 2020). This research provides insight into an important consideration, supply chain management aside from only material and resources, that is clearly overlooked within the construction field.
Meng, X. (2020). Proactive management in the context of construction supply chains. Production Planning & Control, 31(7), 527-539.
In this article Meng (2020) looks to investigate proactive management from the perspective of construction supply chains, which is an area that previously consisted of minimal research. To best research this topic Meng (2020) utilized a combination of a literature review, a questionnaire survey, and a series of interviews of managers within the construction field. This broad scope approach to data collection is best suited for this research as there is not much in regards to existing research and the larger the data set the more realistic the conclusion obtained from the data set can be. Meng (2020), based on their research, is able to conclude that there needs to be a higher level of focus directed to developing a proactive and collaborative culture within the construction field. What this research provides to the construction field currently is that there is a serious level of reality to proactive management rather than the typical reactive management approach.

This article, due to being outside of the required “age range” is not to be included within the required references list. The decision to include this reference was based entirely on the high level of value that this research provided in regards to defining supply chain management.

Shi, Q., Ding, X., Zuo, J., & Zillante, G. (2016). Mobile Internet based construction supply chain management: A critical review. Automation in Construction, 72, 143-154.
The basis of the research within this article comes from a systematic review on mobile internet based construction supply chain management via descriptive and thematic analyses of publications retrieved from four major databases (Shi, et.al, 2016). This research is quite substantive as the data collected comes from a wide variety of locations rather than more narrow options. From the research conducted the authors are able to present the approach and basis for the development of an integrated framework in this research domain (Shi, et.al, 2016). To conclude, the authors provide suggestions for further research and the implications for the construction field.
