Part I. Short Response. Based on the readings in Search for China, summarize the main points made by one of the following Chinese intellectuals. Your response should be approximately 2 typed, double-spaced pages in 12 point font.

Part II. Essay Question.
How did China’s relationship with the West change from 1759 to 1900?
The essay should be approximately 4-5 typed pages. You should begin with the Emperor’s Decree of 1759. From there, you can discuss the Opium War and the Boxer Rebellion (among other things) and assess their impact on China’s international standing.
When dealing with the Opium War, you should briefly discuss Lord Palmerston’s response to the crisis.
Information should come from Lectures, PowerPoints 3 & 4, the Palmerston document in Search for China (pp. 106-110), and China: A History (pp. 60-79, 96-105).
