Description
In Part 1 of TMA 02, you will critically evaluate the role that consequential categories play in the research process.
Consequential categories are one of the conceiving principles on DD801. As such, they are covered in-depth in Week 3 (homelessness) and they are also highlighted in Week 5 (harm and drugs politics). In answering this question, you should draw on material from both weeks.
In your essay, you must first identify the key issues that you judge to be central to an understanding of this topic. You will then need to critically evaluate those issues. In both weeks, there are issues around definitions. Week 3 explores the importance of defining concepts, particularly for policy makers and campaign organisations working with homeless people.
In Week 5, there is a debate around the definition of harm as a consequence of categorisation; as well as a critical debate surrounding both the health, social and economic consequences of recreational drugs use, and the legal and policing context.
Consequential categories involve very complex, dynamic relationships between formal, policy-based categorisation; the actions of practitioners; and the reactions of those individuals who are categorised (whether as homeless or as drug users). It is important that you balance your critical evaluation across all three of these areas, using examples from both Week 3 and Week 5.
You will not be able to discuss everything contained in these weeks, so it is important that you choose your issues carefully and structure your argument coherently. You may wish to focus on one issue (e.g. power) that draws on policy, campaigns and individuals who are categorised (e.g. resistance).
Alternatively, you may wish to consider differences in cultural and social perspectives. Other relevant issues involve the impact of consequential categories on research, something which weeks 3 and 5 provide interesting material on.
