Examples Frontotemporal dementia in young-onset in community.

Environmental – noise, lightning, toileting, going to an old address. These which can cause behavioural symptoms of aggression etc.

Communication – aphasia leading to frustration in family or carer can understand what the client is trying to say. Speech and language therapy

Sleep issues leading to behavioural issues. Uses of melatonin or zopiclone (not long term)

Antipsychotics e.g., risperidone (off licenced) however some antipsychotic can increase agitation, aggression and behaviour symptoms.

Ultimately want to keep people in the community rather than admissions (last resort) depending on risk.

o Tip: Consider interventions seen in clinical practice and consult the relevant NICE guidelines to see which interventions are currently being recommended and then consider research supporting their effectiveness (or not!)

o Summarise the evidence and identify the interventions that have been shown to be clinically effective and that the next chapter will consider the nurse’s role in leading changes in practice in order to ensure quality care is given.
