Assignment Description
Your essay should be in three parts. First, in the introduction, provide an overview of the film, in neutral language. Describe the story that it tells, and some of the visual ways in which it tells that story.
Second, describe the context within which the film was created. Who made the film? When, and where was it made? In short, what was the historical and political context within which the film was made and distributed? Always ask: who was the intended audience?
Finally, situate the film within the history of LGBTQ+ lives and cultures. Pick at least one (and not more than three) theme(s) from the course, and discuss how the film helps you to understand those themes better. Pick a term from a glossary, or one of the learning objectives from a chapter for this module.
For more help, review this handout about film analysis from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The handout describes several different types of film analysis; for this assignment, we will be focusing on a contextual analysis for the film you have chosen.
The paper should be 4 to 6 pages long, and properly formatted using APA style. Be sure to quote directly from the movie, and to cite any sources you refer to in your essay – including the movie, and the textbook. You must quote directly from both.
