Using examples from Euthyphro, explain the two types of ignorance that the Socratic Method is designed to expose, and why many think this method is one of the greatest achievements in the history of thought.

In the Apology, Socrates relates the story of how the Oracle of Delphi responded to the question, “Who is the wisest person in Athens.” She replied that “Socrates is the wisest person in Athens,” which he found to be paradoxical insofar as he thought he was not wise because he was ignorant of many things that other people claimed to know with confidence.

Because, according to traditional belief, the Oracle cannot lie, Socrates reasoned that recognizing and admitting his ignorance is the first step towards finding wisdom.

Using examples from Euthyphro, explain the two types of ignorance that the Socratic Method is designed to expose, and why many think this method is one of the greatest achievements in the history of thought.

Do you agree or disagree with his assertion that admitting ignorance is the first step to acquiring wisdom, and with this assessment of his method? Defend your position.
