Individual Coursework Assignment Brief
MSc in Human Resource Management
Background
A learning outcome of Business Leadership is to:
‘Recognise the business drivers for diversity, together with the significance of cross- cultural influences on leadership when leading diverse teams.’
Assignment
Reflect on your teamwork (actual and/or virtual) in all modules in your programme (MSc in HRM), in work, at school and in outside activities. Write a reflective account of your own teamwork experiences with respect to diversity, using two key examples from any setting. Ensure that you are also reflexive in your writing. (maximum 300 words).
Guidance
1. Choose two examples of teamwork, when you have worked in diverse groups. Focus on cross-cultural diversity (this includes different subcultures within a nation) and / or any of these types of diversity: gender, sexual orientation, age or disability.
It is fine to choose 2 cross-cultural examples, for example, or 2 from the different types of diversity listed. These examples can be drawn from school, university, work or any outside activity.
2. Use one of these two reflective models to guide your reflection: Gibbs (1988) or Moon (1999). These are helpful guides to the Gibbs and Moon models:

https://efs.weblogs.anu.edu.au/files/2018/01/Moon-on-Reflective-Writing.pdf
3. Reflect on your 2 examples using the Gibbs or Moon approach.
4. Write a reflective account of your two chosen examples of working in diverse teams.
Consider your teamwork experiences in relation to diversity of team members, not leadership of the team. What illuminating experiences did you have, which helped you to appreciate the benefits of diversity?
What challenges did you face, which made you consider the difficulties of diverse teams?
How have you learned and developed as a result of this? How have you appreciated differences between people, as a result of teamwork?
5. Think about who you are (Belbin; MBTI etc.) and how this had affected your perception of each chosen team experience.
6. Read about reflexivity in order to help with this work, such as
Finlay, L. (1998) ‘Reflexivity: an essential component for all research?’, British Journal of Occupational Therapy, 61, 10: 453-456.
Johnson, P. and Duberley, J. (2003) ‘Reflexivity in management research’, Journal of Management Studies, 40: 1279-1303.
NB The only references needed are Gibbs or Moon; any reflexivity reading and any models (MBTI; Belbin etc.). No other theory or academic references are needed. This is an exercise in personal reflection and reflexivity rather than using academic theory.
