“Books may not change our suffering, books may not protect us from evil, books may not tell us what is good or what is beautiful, and they will certainly not shield us from the common fate of the grave. But books grant us myriad possibilities: the possibility of change, the possibility of illumination.” ― Alberto Manguel
Task
For your Independent Study Unit, you will select, read, and analyze the literary merits of a challenging novel from the MMHS English Department list, on which you will base an 8-10 page (2000-2500 word) critical research essay.
In order to reinforce your essay’s thesis and to facilitate your transition into university-level study, you will be expected to conduct research at the MMHS Learning Commons, at local libraries, and at the Toronto Reference Library, where you will read selected essays, reviews, journal articles, and criticism as secondary source research for integration into your essay. You will also need to select an appropriate literary theory studied in class through which you interpret your text.
