Description
Assignment
You are part of a research group that is looking to put together a research proposal for a grant call (outlined on page 3) focusing on mental health across the life course. You have been asked to develop a research proposal [one using a quantitative design).
Quantitative Proposal – 2500 words)
The quantitative design research proposal should comprise 2,500 words of text, excluding reference lists and appendices. Students are required to select a question that fits in with the themes outlined in the GRANT CALL: select the setting, specify the research question (hypothesis, or problem) and address it by using quantitative approach. The research proposal should include the following:
a) A 300 word lay summary abstract in a way that is understandable for a lay person (i.e. someone with no/little knowledge in the field);
b) A research question or hypothesis;
c) A 2,150 word research plan which includes a justification of the quantitative design and makes reference to theory and the existing literature underpinning the choices made.
Grant call
Mental Health Society (MHS) themed call: Mental health care across the life course
Aim and introduction
The Mental Health Society (MHS) recognises that there is a paucity of high quality research to increase the evidence base for support and promotion of mental health across the life course. We therefore encourage proposals that aim to address one of the following problems.
Background
Globally, the burden of poor mental health is a growing concern not only because of the significant impact upon health but also because of the resultant social, human and economic consequences. There are many different mental health problems, however, that tend to be characterised by abnormal thoughts, emotions and behaviours, which can impact upon relationships with others. According to the World Health Organization depression and anxiety disorders are the most common mental disorders affecting 300 million and 260 million people worldwide respectively. Bipolar affective disorder affects around 60 million people and schizophrenia affects more than 21 million worldwide. In addition, the number of people living with dementia has been estimated at 50 million worldwide, and this is projected to reach 152 million by 2050 . The harmful use of alcohol is responsible for 3 million deaths per year and also leads to a range of mental issues .
Remaining or returning to paid employment for people with mental health problems.
The mental health of the population is a growing public health concern across the world. Poor mental health involves a human cost, to individuals and their families, a societal cost, which impacts upon public services (health and social care, housing, education, criminal justice, and social security services) as well as the wider economy. Poor mental health has consistently found to be associated with economic disadvantage, deprivation, unemployment, poor education, poor physical health, social class and heightened health risk behaviour .
Thus, as the Mental Health Foundation point out: “People with mental health problems are more likely to experience physical health problems, smoke, be overweight, use drugs and drink alcohol to excess, have a disrupted education, be unemployed, take time off work, fall into poverty, and be over-represented in the criminal justice system” .
We therefore welcome proposals from researchers that address the following theme: How can people with mental health problems best be supported to remain in paid employment.
