Failure of Democracy and the Rise of Totalitarianism

Joseph Stalin, the most brutal dictator in our world history (History.com Editors, 2009). He was born into poverty. Joseph Stalin’s mother wanted him to become a priest, but he rebelled and became an atheist anarchist. History and politics played a large role in his decision to turn to totalitarianism. He joined the parties that overthrew the Tsar of Russia and systematically manipulated his way to the party’s top. Under his reign, anybody that got in his way was executed, exiled, or sent to a concentration camp (History.com Editors, 2009).
Under Stalin’s iron rule, he took the country from an impoverished war-ridden disaster under the monarchy and turned Russia into a superpower with nuclear capability (History.com Editors, 2009). The Great Depression in the United States did not play any role in Stalin’s rise to power or controlling his country. Lenin had already laid the groundwork for his rise to power. The reading for this week states it very eloquently “The great danger that neither Marx nor Lenin had foreseen had come to pass the party itself the Vanguard organization leading the way into the utopian future had become corrupt”(Duiker, 2014).
