Ellison covers the main ideas of “Coming of Age”, and what it means to be a person of color post Reconstruction America 1930’s-1940’s. He covers the racist constraints of Jim Crow laws in the South, and the less visible but ever present racial prejudices in the North. In all of this, he deals with anyone who has felt “Invisible”. He also presents the idea of Coming of Age as a Universal theme all people experience through time and circumstance. He deals with these major personal and social issues as an artist and a musician.
Using any useful visuals and text capture the following :
1. Main motif-struggles of black people trying to create a life with prohibitive restrictions of White suppression ; laws, social practices, and attitudes toward “other than whites”.
2. Depictions of people considered “Invisible “in society(anyone considered others).
3. Achievements of Black people in America despite the horrific practices of slavery, segregation, and white supremacy.
4. Ellison’s view of Humanity, Brotherhood, Inclusivity, and “The Arts” as a Universal Unifier.
