Much of the conflicts involved with Israel can be traced back to the events in the Old Testament. Claims to this land tends to follow the history and life of Abraham and his sons, Isaac and Ishmael. Abraham’s descendants would settle in Canaan, now called Israel in the present day. The hostility between Arabs and Jews would date back during this time in history when both groups populated this area and claimed it to be holy. King David would rule this region for about a thousand years until the Assyrians would then invade and conquer Israel.

Then followed the Babylonians who pushed the Jews out of their own kingdom (Draiman, 2015). Persians would soon follow in 536 B.C.E. Then the Romans would come and conquer at around 60 B.C.E. (Draiman, 2015). This trend of conquering Israel would continue on through the Crusades and eventually the Ottoman Empire would rule Israel and much of the Middle East from 1517 through 1917 (Draiman, 2015). Much of the conquests for Israel came from different empires throughout the millennia, though the claim of it being the Holy Land may have had some influence as to why this small country had been conquered again and again.

The continuation to control Israel would resume with the end of World War I. With the victory of the Allies, the Ottoman Empire’s rule over its territories had ended and Great Britain would then claim control over Israel (History.corn Editors, 2017). The Balfour Declaration was written by Britain to show support for the Jews to establish Palestine as their national home (History.com Editors, 2017). The League of Nations would approve of the Balfour Declaration and Britain’s authority over Palestine in 1922. Britain would remain in control until the years that followed World War II, where Israel became an independent state in 1948 (Duiker, 2015). Concern over territories emerged between Arabs and Jews regarding boundaries in the state.

After World War II, many Jew who were coming from Europe, would migrate towards Palestine. In the fall of 1947, the issue between Arabs and Jews regarding territory in Palestine would then attract the attention of the U.N. (Duiker, 2015). With ongoing negotiation, the U.N. would offer a deal to divide the remaining land into both an Arab state and a Jewish state (Duiker, 1025). Jewish leadership accepted this proposal, though Arab leaders declined it (Draiman, 2015). With growing conflict between Jewish and Arab forces, would cause the British forces who kept the peace between the two populations, withdrew in May 1948 (Duiker). David Ben-Gurion, the Zionist leader at the time, had announced the state of Israel’s independence (Duiker, 2015).

The effects of the Balfour Declaration allowed the Jewish people to reclaim their land once again, though an ongoing conflict between territories would continue during present day. Yes, the Jews were able to go back to Israel and claim it because of the Balfour Declaration, though it would be a reminder to Arabs about the conquest of British rule on land they also claimeci. The conflict between Jews and Arabs is complex and the Balfour Declaration was the catalyst for the rnodern conflicts between Israel and Palestine today.
