Irving had visited thehamlet of Sleepy Hollow in his youth and his estate, Sunnyside, wasonce owned by theVan Tassel family. Therefore, Irving incorporatedthis setting and thisfamily into the framework of Germanic legends to write”The Legend ofSleepy Hollow” and “Rip Van Winkle.” Also, Irvingcreated the oldgentleman, Diedrich Knickerbocker, as the source ofthese tales.
