In law and policy, you will often be required to read lengthy documents or conduct detailed research only to provide a brief, truncated review of the most important elements of what you read. As such, it is important to be able to consume large amounts of information and relay the most important concepts, ideas, principles, and themes. The Reading Summary and Reflective Comments assignment is designed to equip you with this skill – synthesizing, explaining, and applying large amounts of information.
For weeks 1 through 7 you will summarize the main principles from the Henderson and Payne readings (as well as other select readings) and reflect on concepts, ideas, principles, and themes from these readings. The goal is to understand the readings and current and historical events while also showing how these ideas can be applied to understanding the events of today. In addition to understanding important concepts, ideas, principles, and themes, you should also master the skill of distilling large amounts of information into small amounts of information that can be used to brief leaders.
INSTRUCTIONS
You will need to summarize the main principles and reflect on these principles in order to make the content meaningful to you. This will ensure that you understand the reading and its relationship to current events. The reflective comments may draw on your experiences or information from other readings. You must also critique ideas considering a biblical worldview.
Items to include are outlined as follows:
• Length of Summary portion of each assignment: 100-125 words
• Length of Reflection portion of each assignment: 150-200 words
• Format of assignment: Use the relevant template for each module’s assignment
In this course you will complete 5 total Summary & Reflection Assignments using the templates provided. In the template, you will notice a table with one or more of your textbooks author’s names, and in some cases, an additional document title you must read. In the “Main Principles” column you will need to summarize the main principles of the assigned textbook chapter reading from each author referenced as well as the other text if noted. Under the “Reflective Comments” column you will need to reflect on these principles in ways that make the content meaningful to you and tie it to current events if applicable.
