The South Carolina Declaration on the Immediate Causes of Secession explains that the state left the union because of the ‘increasing hostility on the part of the non-slaveholding states to the institution of slavery.’” (Chapter 14, page 482). In fact, Alexander Stephenson, the Vice-President of the Confederacy told supporters in March 1861 on the eve of the war that “Our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite idea; its foundations are laid, its corner-stone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery subordination to the superior race is his natural and normal condition. This, our new government, is the first, in the history of the world, based upon this great physical, philosophical, and moral truth.” Indeed, the question of slavery was a major debate even during the Constitutional Conventions.
