Network Defense Topic – Types of Attacks on a Network.

For the critical assignment, students will write a research paper (10 pages, double spaced, not including title page, executive summary page, and references page[s]). The paper will allow students to dive deeply into a network defense topic of their choice that will help apply the concepts learned from the course textbook. Outside research will be required with a minimum of 3 scholarly sources excluding course reading materials, and the students will be required to follow APA guidelines as the paper’s style and citation guide.

Students should follow the sample outline to help them organize their paper:
Title page (1 page)
Executive summary of the topic/subject and what was accomplished (1 page)
Introduction (topic, structure, thesis statement) (1 page)

Critical Assignment topic = Different type of attacks, such as Denial of Service Attacks, Buffer Overflow, IP spoofing, Session Highjacking, and Malware. Then different ways to combat each of the attacks.
Topic literature review (2 pages)
Topic discussion (3 pages)
Student’s position on topic (3 pages)
Conclusions and final thoughts (1 pages)
References (minimum of 3 sources excluding your course reading materials and APA formatted)
Appendices (figures, tables, etc. consistent with APA style)
This phased approach will allow the instructor to provide students with feedback along the way instead of only at the end of the project. Overall, the students will be required to select a topic with the goal of identifying and justifying a well-reasoned position/overview of their chosen topic.
