Expectancy Violations Theory
Explain a Communication Theory via Screencast
Assignment explanation: Each week, you’ll provide your understanding of one assigned chapter using audio/visual (A/V) technology.
More specifics:
• Your screencast must clearly explain a theory from an assigned chapter that week.
Describe all major components/concepts/axioms of the theory. You must also apply the theory to a real-life example.
• Your screencast must be 3-7 minutes long. Work hard to stay in the required time range!
• Develop a strong presentation. Practice vocal variety. Do not read aloud.
Display keywords, practice what you want to say, end with a clincher. On the whole, display only keywords on your screen (not long sentences, not quotes); instead SAY the long quotes aloud.
• Cite ethically.
Cite images included in your presentational aid (using a size 3 font link under photo); see PPTs posted to course for examples of cited images.
Cite Griffin (2012) aloud for learned information and quotations. To cite a source orally, merely state the author(s) last name and year of publication.
For example, if you were explaining to a classmate how to complete this assignment, you could quote me in your video explanation by saying: Sloan (2015) says the correct way “to cite a source orally” is to “state the author(s) last name and year of publication.” When I watch your video, I won’t be able to see the quote marks but I will know you’re citing a direct source BECAUSE you state the author name and year!
• Choose a technology that is EASY to share because you will post a LINK as your submission each week.
• Of course, create original work! So, at the beginning of the recording: state your name, what week of class it is (week 1-5), and what theory you’ll be discussing. It’s important that you demonstrate that this is YOUR creation (not a YouTube video you discovered).
