Who is Right?
Essay Question
In Chapter VIII (pp. 24 onward) of Locke’s An Essay Concerning Human Understanding Locke develops his distinction between Primary and Secondary Qualities. It is a distinction between the way thing are in themselves and the way things appear to us (known as the appearance and reality distinction).
That is, between the Primary Qualities of things (which are inherent in the properties of things) and Secondary Qualities (which are facts about how a thing effects us). Philonous in George Berkeley’s Three Dialogues (page 233 onward) claims that the Primary/Secondary distinction is a nonsense.
Who is correct? Locke or Philonous (Berkeley)? With reference to the course text provide arguments in support of your answer.
