Nursing Leadership Self Assessment & Development
The purpose of the Leader Self-Assessment and Development Reflection Paper is to:
• Synthesize the individual assessments
• Apply the information from assessments to identify your personal leadership strengths and potential limitations
• Create a personal leadership development plan using the template for your self-growth that you can realistically implement over the next year or two. The paper should be 51 pages in length.
Note that while your assessment, reflection, and development plan may be influenced by whether you are in a line management position versus an expert clinician or another role, the function of leadership is still critical to effective organizations and care delivery. Some of you may have had an opportunity within your employment setting for significant formal leadership assessments and feedback (such as 360s).
For others, this may be the first leadership assessment and focus. Regardless, this is a wonderful time to consider (or reconsider) your leadership style and effectiveness. Leadership development is a continuous journey. All materials should be submitted through iThenticate prior to submitting for grading. Remember, this is a paper that describes you – your assessment, and plans for future development.
This paper is not a description of your work environment or job position. Every section of this paper should be about you – as an individual getting to know yourself, to advance your leadership. The development plan, as the culmination of the class, should be specific and describe in detail how you will develop in specific areas related to the findings in your assessment.
It should not describe goals and actions for your job or organization. This plan is about your personal leadership journey. We highly recommend the use of a chart for your Development Plan. A sample Development Plan template is available for use in Sakai, under “Assignments”.
