Description
Write an article on wedding rituals
All the previous terms work can now be utilized to inform your second assignment. Produce a journal article on on wedding rituals in the format of an article published in the journal Sociology Review. (Hard copies of this journal are to be found in the library).
The template for this assignment is available on Nile. Approximately 1500 words for this section (this is not including the reference section or the public domain box)
The main body of the article must be researched just as one would research for an essay. Students must think carefully about ensuring that they cover some theory from the module, some research and possibly data for this article. Unlike an essay this article will require students to break down the topic into specific areas with headings —just as in an article from the aforementioned journal.
Do not forget you will require a leading heading for the whole article. It is important for students to really think about headings – they are not always like essay titles and not so easy as one might think. Space is allocated in the template for these headings.
CONTEMPORARY SOCIETAL CONCERNS /PUBLIC DOMAIN BOX
Students will also have to produce a section/box which gives the reader references and links to sources which in some way touch on the field under scrutiny. So for example it is expected that students will give reference to newspaper articles, TV coverage, UTube footage etc which in some ways links to the selected topic under investigation. Some of these references supplied in this box (taken from first term) will not be expected to be in your final reference section — see below. Therefore if one for example was looking at Education one might well drawn attention to differing political discourses covere
d by the media in recent times, even if your article does not cover this particular direction or possibly coverage of societal concerns about some other aspect of this field — like lack of resources, sex education or school food. It is recognized that there maybe no recent coverage of your specific selected area but one has to establish what have been societal concerns in the field of childhood in recent times.
Therefore it can, if found to be necessary, briefly acknowledge links to other areas of interest which present society has paid attention to which is beyond the scope of your article. This section is really designed for the student to demonstrate their ability to look outside of academic sources and reflect on what society deems of relevance at this particular time which bears some relevance to the field which they are exploring.
Equally it is designed to give the reader insight to societal concerns and other directions for potential exploration. The reader will be looking for your ability to select references from all different sources eg. Ted talks, Blogs, Newspapers, Tv etc. Additional support will be available for this from the lecturer. (approximately 250 words max).
SIGNPOST BOX
Articles in Sociological review often offer the reader a ‘Signpost box” and students, as part of the assignment, are required to produce a similar box which is to briefly outline the key issues, theories etc which the assignment is to cover — very similar to an abstract. (approximately 100 words)
ILLUSTRATIONS
Students are required to select a number of suitable illustrations to support their article — the selected few may well be i
dentified in AS1.
Again pay attention to the visual aspect of your article — does the balance between pictures text graphs etc look good? Note the template provides space for you to comment on the picture etc. Columns are not vital — but wow do they look good — really adds the professional touch.
