Purpose: Completion of this assignment will give the student the opportunity to integrate theory from the class to apply the evidence-based practice search, critical appraisal process, and develop an integration of findings guided by the proposed PICOT question from the first assignment (a current clinical issue). Students are expected to incorporate instructor feedback and evaluation from the previous assignments to this final paper. This should be written as a formal, scholarly paper with a reference page in APA.
Use the headings below (1 through 8) as a guide for the organization of each section of your paper.
Introduction: Begin the paper by writing a short introduction and end with a thesis statement (the purpose of this paper is to XXXX. Include the PICOT question (edited if needed from the first assignment week 2.)
Search Strategies: Search for the Evidence: List the search strategies used and the databases investigated to find information from the peer-reviewed professional literature to answer the PICOT question. (from assignment week 3.)
Summary of the Research Evidence: include the annotated bibliography from 5 selected and reviewed articles with edits if needed. (from assignment week 3)
EXAMPLE:
Bae, S., Mark, B., & Fried, B. (2010). Impact of nursing unit turnover on patient outcomes in hospitals. Journal of Nursing Scholarship 42(1), 40-49.
The purpose of the study was to see how nursing turnover in acute care impacts patient safety. The authors used a secondary data analysis and noted their findings to be significant with p<.05 in most cases. The findings support their hypothesis that nursing turnover adversely impacted care for patients. The main finding was that team work was negatively affected by turnover. Other important findings were that the nursing units with higher teamwork and collaboration scores had fewer medication errors. The evidence level for this article was VI as the study was descriptive in design.
Critical Analysis: Use the information from the CASP Checklists (including your reflection paragraphs) to write a summary (about 2-3 pages) synthesizing the level of evidence discovered, quality of the findings and applicability to practice.
This section should be concise and demonstrate critical thinking about the analysis of the evidence. Be sure to include the strength of the current evidence and the limitations of the current evidence.
(From assignment week 4, 5 & 6)
Summary of Expert Evidence such as clinical guidelines-include these if appropriate from organizations and leaders in the field.
Examples of sources for this section include the CDC, Healthy People 2020, AHRQ, ANA, AMA, specific nursing groups such as the Oncology Nurses Society (ONS) etc. included above (From assignment week 6)
Recommendations: Apply the evidence, determine and describe logical and feasible recommendations supported by the evidence you have presented in the critical analysis section above. Stakeholders/Change Agents: Discuss who, or what organizations are concerned with the findings and the recommendations. Who may benefit from the information, including patients, families, health care professionals, insurance carriers and more.
Describe how feasible your recommendations are for these identified groups to develop and implement. Focus this section on how to include patient’s preferences and values in the process (week 6)
