The danger of a single story english
Description
(325-350 words). First read through the PowerPoint: “Ideology” and listen to Adiche’s “The Danger of a Single Story,” then respond to the following prompt jusing short essay format:
Briefly define the term ‘ideology” (one to two sentences) Then applying this term to “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson, write two-three paragraphs that address how and in what way Jackson’s narrative depicts a particular ideology or belief system that deeply influences how individuals act or behave.
What do you take away from the narrative and/or what do you think Jackson hopes to get across to us, her readers? As noted in the discussion forum, Jackson interestingly starts out her story on a beautiful summer day to set expectations which change by the story’s last scene. How does the story ‘show’ rather simply ‘tell’ the danger of not questioning the ideological underpinnings of such a practice or what Adichie might call the danger of a single story?
For your concluding paragraph, describe an example of either a personal or cultural ideology that affects either you or others.
