How has the patient’s control over his own health care changed?

Pt autonomy in care has always been emphasized over time, this code of conduct gives the patients the ability to engineer their care, making decisions for themselves when necessary. Patient-centered health care initiative was developed to help guide patient autonomy, informing them about their health care rights, and organizational policy in other to achieve the best possible health care outcome. Patients are now becoming more educated and interested in learning about their health, they are seeking new ways to stay on top of their health care plans, and this involves having one on one interaction with their doctors and other clinical experts in other to make the right health care choice (Falvo, 2011).
Previously, physicians made all necessary health care decisions for their patients starting from planning of care, to prescribing the treatment, and the patient would either comply or not. But this is not the case now because the health care system has moved into a much more enlightened era of care, and many physicians seek to involve patients, to help them understand treatment options, and to work collaboratively to achieve goals of wellness (Vahdat, et. al. 2014).
Recently, patients are seeking more independence with their personal care due to the increase in the cost of health care services and lack of health insurance, patients who can manage themselves at home tend to avoid the hospital in other to avoid unnecessary costs of health care (Vahdat, et. al. 2014).

Healthcare today has greatly improved as patients and families are expected to take part or play an active role with the management of their health along with the healthcare providers. Healthcare professionals possess the knowledge and expertise to help with managing a patient’s condition. The normal practice was that the patient was just expected to follow the Doctor’s directions and take their medications as prescribed, at first patient’s had little or no say in their care. In today’s healthcare with the advancement of technology which has contributed to the changes in healthcare over the years.
Patient’s can now has lookup further information about their conditions and treatments and even google some ideas to recommend to the healthcare providers. Most patients these days are more involved in their plan of care which even make it easier to the healthcare providers as the patients help with their history. The patients are now expected to be informed about their conditions and help create a plan of care that suites them. They are given the information and resources to help manage their health and are expected to adhere to theplans. Patients need to not only receive information but play an active part in their own health (Falvo, 2011).

The patient’s control over his health care has changed due to the quality of the information that has to be provided by the health care professionals. Effective patient teaching and interactions must meet the patient’s goals, needs, and preferences (Falvo, 2011). The excellence of information given to a patient allows the informed patient to be an active participant in their health care. The health care professional delivers patients/families with enough information, so the patient feels empowered and increases their sense of control and confidence.
Patients today are more involved in making choices and have rights and expectations regarding what they receive from health care services. Patients today are expected to participate more and assume more responsibility for their health care and health outcomes. The idea of a partnership between the patient and health professional has been an evolving concept in the U.S health care system. The concept of this partnership emphasizes the patients’ right and responsibility to be involved in their health care. Partnership and collaboration can be considered the cornerstone of patient-centered care has been defined as behavior that elicits, respects, and incorporates patients’ wishes and allows active patient participation. Patient-centered care results in patient satisfaction and improved health outcomes (Falvo, 2011). The three characteristics of this partnership are relationship, power-sharing, and negotiation (Falvo, 2011).

What part does negotiation play in patient education?

Negotiation is compromising to encourage active participation in care. Negotiation helps patients be informed about their options and helps them feel included in decision making. It helps with collaboration and aids the health care team and patient in reaching an agreement on how to proceed with their care (Falvo 2011). For instance, one of my post-op open heart surgery patients may say that they don’t want to walk. Many have refused activity. I have to educate them on the importance of mobility to decrease their chances of pneumonia. We may then agree that if they walk 2 laps, then can get back to bed to take a short nap or have a food item of their choice. Making these deals helps them feel like they have a say in their care and improves adherence to patient education.

Negotiation is a process where health care professionals and patients discuss goals that are acceptable to both. Negotiation identifies areas of agreement and disagreement and provides a forum for the discussion of solutions. In a negotiation, either side offers recommendation which they prefer while the other side share their goals and expectations which they deem acceptable. Health care professionals use negotiation techniques directly with patients to improve the treatment process and base it on what the patient expects (Falvo, 2011). Negotiation also helps identify and note new drugs and treatments that can be especially vital for a patient with a chronic disease or addiction.

Negotiation in health care is vital because it promotes a patient’s compliance by creating a common ground between the health care professional and the patient. it allows the opportunity for the health care professional and patient to focus on areas that both parties agree on and to continue to work on and find solutions through problem-solving for those areas that they don’t agree on. This will improve the likelihood the patient will follow the plan of care and comply with the treatment regimen (Falvo, 2011).
Negotiation breeds shared responsibility, concerns, efforts, decision-making, and health care goals on both the patient and the health care professional. The strategy of negotiation is achieved when the patient-centered approach to care is used, when the patient is involved from planning to execution, they feel a sense of belonging which makes them more willing to do their part of the negotiation to promote their own health and well-being. it also plays an important role in patient education because it provides the opportunity for patients to learn about their health and treatment and decide what they are able to do to promote their health (Falvo, 2011).
Effective negotiations have led to positive patient outcomes, compliance with health education, and more health care providers are adopting this approach in modern health care. Negotiation in healthcare delivery is all about understanding and engaging with people more effectively. Health care professionals and administrators who develop the skills of effective negotiation will find that they are better equipped to heal, collaborate, treat, and render better health care services (Falvo, 2011).
