Class Description: Media, Culture & Society engages classical key debates and emerging scholarship in the field of mass communication and cultural studies. In this course, students will examine a wide range of theories, concepts, and case studies to deepen their knowledge and cultivate their critical thinking skills. This course explores defining themes and areas of scholarly inquiry that connect with pressing contemporary issues. Media, Culture & Society is designed to facilitate the exploration of classic media and cultural studies theories with contemporary communication studies scholarship, and to encourage students to conduct original documentary or primary research in an area of their own choosing. The goal is to build a knowledge community that bolsters and supports the intellectual, critical, pedagogical, creative, and emotional labour of the group in the elaboration of timely and relevant academic research.

discuss and summarize foundational theories that informed the field of mass communication and cultural studies;
identify emerging work that advances our knowledge in diverse and inclusive ways;
analyze current events through theoretical lenses; and

Media has played a vital role in information and knowledge dissemination since ancient times. Throughout the years, media has been rapidly changing from traditional forms of media such as the written word, painting and photography to modern art, the internet and online telecommunications. Nowadays, media companies rely on digital media greatly in reaching their audience than when using traditional media. This research will compare two medias; social media and newspapers and determine their accuracy, impact and influence in information dissemination and culture.
