Instructions
Read “Ecology in a Biblical Perspective” by Tikva Frymer-Kensky, accessible via Brightspace.
Write a précis of this chapter.
Tips
Read the guide thoroughly.
Don’t stress out trying to incorporate every little detail, bit of evidence, or name mentioned. Your max word count simply isn’t high enough! Rather, try to distill only what you believe to be essential to understanding the author’s principal arguments.
Imagine you are writing the précis for a busy academic who doesn’t have time to read the full text but requires a snapshot understanding of its main arguments.
A précis is not the place for original analysis or evaluative comments on the merits of the text’s ideas. The main questions to ask are: what is the text arguing? How is it advancing (or defending) its arguments?
You may quote from the original text! Large block quotes, however, would be frowned upon in this exercise.
You do not have to reproduce the sequence of the text in its exact order in your précis. In fact, paraphrasing line by line may be an inefficient way of conveying the essay’s main arguments.
Grade Rubric
“A” range: Concisely presents the text’s main arguments in a logical structure. Style is sophisticated. Doesn’t include extraneous details. Demonstrates a thorough understanding of the text.
“B” range: The main arguments might be distilled from the text, but they’re presented in a confused order. Or, the essay contains a great structure and sequence of ideas, but they don’t hit the mark in comparison to the original text. Some extraneous details get in the way of the main arguments. Style is reaching toward sophistication.
“C” range: An attempt is made to understand the text, but the essay misses more than a few key arguments. Summarizes the sequence of the text rather than the construction of the text’s arguments. This essay might have a confused/hard to follow structure.
“D” range: Fails to comprehend the text’s arguments.
