Hyperthyroidism and Erectile Dysfunction
Hyperthyroidism is a condition where a person has too much thyroid hormone due to excess stimulation of the thyroid gland, excess production of the TSH or a disease of the thyroid gland. (Braun & Anderson, 2017). Graves’ disease is one of the most common form in the US. This is an autoimmune disease with unknown cause.
Symptoms of Graves’ disease include goiter, weight loss, agitation, restlessness, sweating and diarrhea. Some other common clinical manifestations include tachycardia, palpitations and tremor.
Diagnosis is done by lab testing including TSH, T3 and T4 levels. There is also a free thyroxine level and increased uptake of radioactive iodine by the thyroid gland that also confirms the diagnosis. (Braun & Anderson, 2017).
This can be treated with medications that block the thyroid hormone production. Another treatment option is also oral thyroid hormone replacement therapy. Surgical removal of all part of the gland is also a surgical treatment option. (Braun & Anderson, 2017).
Erectile dysfunction is the inability for a male to maintain or achieve an erection that is sufficient for sexual performance. (Braun & Anderson, 2017).
There are many factors that can cause ED including hormone issues, neurologic issues and possibly vascular obstruction. (Braun & Anderson, 2017). There are many psychologic issues that can contribute as well including depression and anxiety. A history and physical is a good start to a diagnosis.
There are some blood tests that can be ordered to help diagnose including Serum hormone levels. Treatment for ED includes psychological support, penile transplant and pharmacologic medications.
