Write Your Own Poem
Write their own reflective narrative in the form of an ode or sonnet. Plan and deliver a reflective narrative that explores the significance of a personal object, experience, event, or concern; uses sensory language to convey a vivid picture; includes appropriate narrative techniques (e.g., dialogue, pacing, description); and draws comparisons between the specific object or experience and broader themes of the Romantic or Victorian eras (such as the source of inspiration of the poet or artist, the role of nature in poetry, the role of the poet in social issues, poetry for the “common man.”).
Use these guidelines when working on your odes or sonnets:
a significant object, event, experience or concern.
Give your object or experience, etc., praise or thanks. (Oh, _____________!)
Speak directly to the object or experience.
Use adjectives to describe it.
Use verbs to bring the object or experience to life. (Personification)
Use repeated lines.
