Book Report Instructions
While we will learn many great concepts and principles in class, it is always helpful to learn from a different perspective. One of the best HR books on the market right now is Work Rules by Laszlo Block. Laszlo is one of the top HR leaders at Google.
He will take us through similar concepts that we are covering in class but discusses how Google implements each of these practices and some of the struggles Google has had with each practice over the years.
Work Rules is a great supplement to the other things we will do in class. You will learn a ton from reading it. For some, this will be your favorite part of the class.
For Each Chapter
⦁ Pick two core concepts from Work Rules and define them.
⦁ Identify a problem you have seen or heard about in an organization and describe it.
⦁ Pick one of the two concepts you chose in part one and explain how you would apply it to solve the problem you identified in part two.
Make sure to go deep into the logic of how this would apply and why you expect this approach to work.
Do not use a problem and solution that you have already seen used.
This often ends up with not properly applying the concept to the problem you have selected and will result in lost points. Original thinking is the point of this exercise.
For the Entire Book
⦁ Start with a short introductory paragraph.
⦁ Write a concluding paragraph that highlights the 2-3 biggest takeaways you will take from having read this book.
Overview of structure
Chapter 1
Chapter 1 Concepts (This heading should be bolded and italicized)
⦁ Identify in bold the concept, and then define the concept.
Chapter 1 Problem (This heading should be bolded and italicized)
⦁ Describe the problem you are going to solve (you should be able to do this in one to two paragraphs).
Chapter 1 Concept application (This heading should be bolded and italicized)
⦁ Explain how you can use the concept that you picked to solve the problem that you introduced. Make sure to take the reader through the logic of how they would implement the concept to this problem, why this approach is expected to work.
Chapter 2
Chapter 2 Concepts (This heading should be bolded and italicized)
⦁ Identify in bold the concept, and then define the concept.
Chapter 2 Problem (This heading should be bolded and italicized)
⦁ Describe the problem you are going to solve (you should be able to do this in one to two paragraphs).
Chapter 2 Concept application (This heading should be bolded and italicized)
⦁ Explain how you can use the concept that you picked to solve the problem that you introduced. Make sure to take the reader through the logic of how they would implement the concept to this problem, why this approach is expected to work.
Papers should be submitted single-spaced in 12 point Times New Roman font.
In short, this can be a tough assignment, but one that should be beneficial to your overall skill development.
Make sure to use headings and subheadings to guide the reader as indicated above or else you will lose a lot of points really quickly.
Key points for success
⦁ Make sure that you write this out in paper format. That means full sentences and paragraphs.
⦁ Proofread your paper, use Grammarly (it’s free and will help you to develop better grammar skills).
⦁ Use headings and subheadings to guide the reader (if you don’t you will lose points). Make sure you don’t blend the sections together.
⦁ Another way that people have lost points on this is they skimp on portions so writing paragraphs that are really short and look like only minimal effort has been put in will lose points. You need to make sure that you go deeper than surface level.
⦁ Make sure that the problem you pick is business-related. If you can’t solve the problem with the concepts that you pick then change the problem or the concepts you choose to go with. If your logic is flawed in fixing the problem you will lose points.
⦁ Make sure you apply sound logic. Make sure that what you are thinking makes it to the page in written form. Writing is one of the highest forms of thinking and writing your ideas out explicitly should help you to identify gaps in your logic. When there is a gap, make sure that you fill that gap.
