Nursing Leadership Interview

Paper details:

LEADERSHIP INTERVIEW AND REFLECTION ASSIGNMENT (25%)

In this assignment students will interview a nurse leader who demonstrates effective leadership practice and reflect on their own leadership capacity within the context of this experience. Interviewing a nurse leader provides a student with the opportunity to link leadership theory to practice and make meaning of leadership complexities and the application of leadership (Smith & Roebuck, 2010).

Reflecting on one’s own leader skills and abilities within this context not only supports practice expectations, it is a hallmark of the personal and professional leadership development.
INSTRUCTIONS

• Select a nurse leader for the interview assignment that you believe demonstrates effective leadership. The nursing leader MUST be a RN and hold a recognized leadership position, such as a unit manager, director of a program or agency, chair of a committee, an administrator, charge nurse or other leadership position.

At a minimum, the nurse leader should also hold a Bachelor of Science Nursing (BScN) or Bachelor of Nursing (BN) degree. If the RN leader you would like to interview does not hold BScN/BN degree, you MUST contact the course instructor to discuss your selection before proceeding with your interview.

• Prepare a structured interview guide. The interview should address pertinent issues and aspects of leadership that reflect themes and topics within the course and that you have selected from the evidenced-based nursing literature. Interviews may take place in person (ideal) or via telephone or webcam.

• Your interview guide MUST include the following 5 questions in addition to a MINIMUM of 5 other original (your own) questions:

• What does nursing leadership mean to you?
• How would you describe your leadership style? What nursing theory, if any, do you apply in your leadership practice?

• What do you think makes you an effective nurse leader?
• What has influenced your leadership practice the most?
• What is the most challenging part of being a nurse leader?

NOTE: Your interview guide is intended to help structure your discussion. You do not need to adhere strictly to the guide. You are encouraged to ask additional questions that allow you to fully explore ideas prompted by the questions in your guide.

• Conduct the interview and take notes. You will be required to submit these notes as an appendix to your written submission. You may only use a recording device if you have the explicit written consent of the interviewee.

• Write your interviewee a thank-you note within a week’s time of completing the interview and send to the interviewee.

• Following the interview and before beginning your report, complete a self-analysis of our own leadership capacity using one or more of self-analysis resources posted in the course Learning Management System (LMS)-Blackboard.
