Topic: Tim Lockman’s “How to Read a Scholarly Article”
Paper details:
Provides the citation for the two required scholarly articles you plan on using for your
Reflective Essay
In paragraph form under each citation: (1) clearly identifies the container for this scholarly article (likely a journal); (2) explains what the qualifications are for the writers of this article; and (3) details other features that distinguishes this text as scholarly ( (Links to an external site.) )
This identification is meant to ensure that you meet the minimum scholarly article requirement for the assignment sequence before you work on the “larger” assignments that are upcoming.
Lockman’s advice is on how one can read a scholarly article which is different from reading a novel. Unlike a novel, one does not have to read words in a scholarly article from the beginning to the end to maximize on it.
To have increased comprehension and save time, it is important that one knows the important sections that will be useful, and this includes; abstract, references, and introduction (Kishwaukee College Library [KCL], 2012).
Lockman further insists on the importance of having a clear topic statement or research questions in mind so that one can easily decide on the article that helps answer the research questions.
The first step is reading the abstract, which is the summary of the article and can help one to decide whether the article is relevant to the chosen topic or not and whether it can be helpful. Identifying important sections helps to save time and identify what will work for the research question and what will not (KCL, 2012).
The second step is reading through the introduction by scanning through it or helping save time and energy that would have otherwise been used to read through the entire article.
Scanning through the sentences helps one to look through key points and ideas that will be helpful.
Also, it is important to identify the key points because they can be useful later on and need to be paraphrased, which is why it is important to underline and highlight them for easy retrieval later on when it is needed.
Reference or work cited is another important section that should not be overlooked because it helps one learn and advance their knowledge in that field of study.
Together with the accompanying footnotes, it allows one to read on the topic in more detail.
