Verbal and Nonverbal Communication

Description

Conduct Research by completing the following verbal and nonverbal communication experiment:

a. Break 5 nonverbal “rules” you normally follow.

For example, wear toilet paper on your shoe, dress formally for class, place some broccoli in your teeth. What verbal and nonverbal reactions did you get?

II. Reflect on your experiments and answer the following questions:

a. What happens when we “break the rules” of “normal communication?”

b. How do verbal and nonverbal communication function together to create meaning? How can they complement, contradict, and substitute each other? How did you see this to be true or not in your experiments?

c. How does the communication environment impact the meaning attached to the message? Based upon your experiments, explain how communication is rule-governed and context based.

d. When the nonverbal and verbal messages contradict each other, what are you more likely to believe the verbal or nonverbal messages?

From your experiments think about an example when:

• you believed the verbal communication but the nonverbal told you something else and your hunch that the verbal was correct was correct!

• you believed the verbal communication but the nonverbal told you something else and you should have believed the nonverbal communication!

Your essay should include a summary of both experiments and summary to the responses to the guiding questions above. This should be through a detailed analysis and link to the class and textbook.
