Writing Literature Reviews

Instructions:

Identify a topic from amongst the questions/topics explored in class on which to write a term paper.Find and discuss, in a brief paper, at least 3 review papers on that topic and 6 research papers. The reviews should discuss competing theories or conflicting evidence.

Identify those areas of controversy and relate them to the course content.

References must be reviews or primary research articles published in peer-reviewed journals in psychology, neuroscience or medicine and must be cited as support within your paper and included in a references list at the end. APA citation format is required.

Writing style and organization is an important and challenging component of this assignment.

Length should be no more than 5 pages, double spaced (not including references list). This paper is not to be a simple summary of the articles but rather a thematically organized exploration and critical analysis of the current controversies driving that research. A typical paragraph should cite more than one paper as evidence, integrating that evidence in support of an argument.

Take into account the methodological limitations of which you are aware as they apply to the research described in the articles. Conclude either with a decision on which evidence is more compelling, or with a decision regarding which theory appears to best account for the evidence to date.

Recommended structure:

1. Introductory paragraph(s) stating question or topic of debate

a. Avoid making sweeping, unsupported statements of fact. Any statement you make should be supportable if
someone asks, “how do you know that?”.

2. Body

a. Each paragraph represents an element of the answer or a particular position in the debate and contains
evidence from multiple sources supporting that particular point/position.

b. Some paragraphs contain critiques questioning the validity of evidence-based on methodological or logical
weaknesses or alternative explanations for cited findings.

3. Conclusion

a. Identify the answer to the question or strongest position in the debate, briefly recapping the evidence for it
(and perhaps against the other position(s).

b. Avoid the language of personal opinion (e.g. “I believe” or “it seems to me”); this section represents the
informed conclusion drawn by an expert in the field (you, after all that research!).
