A summary is one way to write a review of a journal article. To successfully summarize a journal article, you must first read and understand the publication. A summary involves briefly but accurately stating the key points of the article for a reader who has not read the original article.

You will be assigned one of four articles to read and summarize.

The introductory paragraph – summarize the background information and the purpose

of the paper/research – 20 pts

Explain the methods that were used to investigate the research questions – 10 pts

Outline the results of the study, emphasizing the key results (if any) – 20 pts

State the conclusion and learning objective – 15 pts

Critique: A Critical Review and Assessment of the Article – 25 pts

Include your own analysis and evaluation of the article

Do not include personal opinions – stick to the facts (or lack of supporting facts) in the paper

Focus on the positive aspects and what the author(s) of the study learned.

Note limitations of the study at the end of the essay

Do the data and conclusions contradict each other?

Is there sufficient data to support the author’s conclusions?
