Reading and Researching a Journal Article
Description
A summary is one way to write a review of a journal article. To successfully summarize a journal article, you must first read and understand the publication. A summary involves briefly but accurately stating the key points of the article for a reader who has not read the original article.
You will be assigned one of four articles to read and summarize.
Format – 10 pts

Organization
The introductory paragraph – summarize the background information and the purpose
of the paper/research – 20 pts
Explain the methods that were used to investigate the research questions – 10 pts
Outline the results of the study, emphasizing the key results (if any) – 20 pts
State the conclusion and learning objective – 15 pts
Critique: A Critical Review and Assessment of the Article – 25 pts
Include your own analysis and evaluation of the article
Do not include personal opinions – stick to the facts (or lack of supporting facts) in the paper
Focus on the positive aspects and what the author(s) of the study learned.
Note limitations of the study at the end of the essay
Do the data and conclusions contradict each other?
Is there sufficient data to support the author’s conclusions?
What questions remain unanswered?
How could future studies be improved?
How could this information be used in a forensic laboratory?
