Purpose of this assessment
The assignment has been designed to test the understanding of students on the core principles of organisational behaviour, and how these apply to public service organisations, particularly how topics of structure, culture and motivation are fundamental to public service delivery.
Scenario
You are employed by a public service organisation (Police) and are coming to the end of your probation period. As part of your continued professional development, you have enrolled on the Organisational Structure and Culture module at DGHE to develop a better appreciation of how your organisation operates and better understand your role as a public servant.
A public service organisation is defined as any organisation that is owned and operated by the government and exists to provide services to the citizens of a country. This includes the emergency services, military, security and welfare, government (central, regional, local), and supporting organisations.
Task 1
You need to create a report that analyses one public service( Police in UK) organisation. The report will have sections:
Introduction
Section 1: Organisational Structure, Culture, and Politics
Assess the organisational structure and map out the organisational chart(hierarchy) of police in UK
Analyse the role of organisational culture and how it influences employee behaviour in organisations.
Explain the impact of local government and central government policies to your selected organisation. (police)
Assess of monitoring and accountability in police organisation, by considering the relevance of chain of command, span of control, lines of authority and centralisation/decentralisation to ensure effective management of public resources.
Section 2: Managing the Public Sector
Analyse management approaches and styles in British police organisation and illustrate with examples.
Administrative approach; Human relation approach; The systems Approach; The Contingency approach
Evaluate the concept of motivation and how it applies to Public service organisations. (Extrinsic and Intrinsic motivation)
