Issues in Culture
Essay CRITERIA:
Demonstrate how much you know about your cultural object or topic but to show that you can apply what you know to a structured and reasoned argument.
A full list of the marking criteria for the essay is included at the end of this document but a high quality essay should have:
1. A high quality written style, in terms of academic tone, vocabulary, attention to spelling, punctuation, grammar and formal presentation. Where you use technical terms, ensure you adequately explain them, so your reader knows how you are intending to use the concept and to demonstrate your own understanding of the ideas being discussed.
2. High quality use of sources, from a wide and relevant selection of material, including essential or further reading included in the reading lists and discussed in the seminars but also demonstrating evidence of your own independent research beyond the essential and further reading.
3. A high quality argument, in terms of a clear and focused analysis of the central issues you have identified, that supports all assertions or claims made with evidence from reliable sources, a fully developed and complex argument that synthesizes the topic, the primary and secondary sources used, including theoretical perspectives of others and your own independent and critically-applied judgement.
An outstanding argument is strong, even polemical if backed-up by evidence or reliable sources, eloquently expressed and develops its points and the materials used towards an original and insightful conclusion.
4. A high quality structure, with a clear focus on the project you have identified, a clear attempt to answer the problems or questions you have proposed and researched, and with a clear indication of definitions and the direction of the argument as the essay proceeds.
There should be a strong coherence within and between the sections of your essay and these should be logically ordered to lead to a clear conclusion that arises from the preceding material.
