Engagement and Assessment in Mental Health

Assignment Guidance

The assignment for this module is in two parts; a persuasive essay and a clinical note. A persuasive essay is one that states your academic or professional opinion and backs this up with clear evidence-based arguments. You are attempting to persuade the reader that the evidence you present is convincing and that they should agree your conclusions.

Your evidence will come from your reading. The essay will focus on the core module concepts of ‘therapeutic engagement’ and ‘mental health assessment’ and will demonstrate your achievement of the four module learning outcomes. You will use knowledge from your Enquiry Based Learning (EBL) group activities and online learning, to develop the essay.

The summative marked assignment will form 100% of the module grade.

The learning outcomes for the module are:

Apply knowledge of the range of engagement and assessment approaches used to promote health and enable access to health services.

Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of participation and involvement in formulation and care planning activities for all.

Formulate evidence-based interventions that support health and well-being for individuals and communities using mental health care scenarios.

Argue the way in which therapeutic engagement skills, communication skills and the understanding of psychological interventions enable individual safety, empowerment and emotional regulation.

Formative Assignment

This formative assignment will enable you to get some feedback to support the development of your final assignment. You will receive some brief individual feedback to advise if you are on the right track for your summative assignment. This formative assignment will not be graded. Although the formative assignment is optional, it is a crucial part of the assignment and feedback process. Some thought at this early stage could save you a resubmission later.

Instructions:

From the three “EBL Triggers” available in Canvas, select the one that your final essay will be based on.
Write an essay plan, using the template provided within the “Assessment” page on Canvas.

Your summative assignment for this module is a persuasive essay and a clinical note, based on the “EBL Trigger” scenario of choice detailed in your formative assignment. This assignment will address Learning Outcomes 1, 2, 3 and 4 by drawing on your conceptual knowledge and understanding of

Therapeutic engagement and mental health assessment,
The associated formulation and care planning
Evidence-based interventions that support health and well-being

You will need to present convincing evidence which persuades the reader that the approaches you are adopting are the most effective for this individual.
There are two parts to the assignment.

Part one: 1,500 words +or- 10% – In this part of the essay you need to;
Focus predominantly on Learning Outcomes 1, 2 and 4.

Outline the approach you would adopt to effectively engage with the individual in the scenario you have selected. You should provide a rational (evidence base) to justify your engagement and assessment approach.

You will demonstrate your understanding of the importance of person-centered and holistic mental health assessment and formulation and to identify needs.

Drawing from the knowledge gained in your Enquiry Based Learning activities and online learning, you will argue and persuade the reader that your engagement and assessment approach is evidence based and would bring about a collaborative approach to assessment and care planning. As you introduce the core concepts, you should include some discussion, exploration and evaluation of these concepts, rather than simply describing them.

Part two: 500 words +or- 10% – In this part of the essay you need to;

Focus predominantly on Learning Outcome 2 and 3.

Compose a clinical note using knowledge from your EBL groups, Canvas materials and your own research. This note will be brief and concise, similar to that of an “admission statement” used within Mental Health wards, capturing the key details of the individual you have chosen to base your essay on.

This note will be formulated as if the individual was entering your care for the first time. It will detail all relevant information needed for an initial clinical note. This will include details such as presenting concerns, any background information, strengths/goals/protective factors and wants/needs.

Also include a brief plan of care which will cover possible interventions which are in line with the role of the mental health nurse. It may help to base your clinical note on the SBAR format outlined in Canvas.
