Discussion Board : Sustaining a Healthy Work Environment
It is important that all nurse function as leaders in promoting a healthy work environment.  Although managers must be involved in promoting a healthy work environment, morale, productivity, and job satisfaction of the team is a daily task and is shared by all members of the team, not just the leadership.

Nurses make up the majority of the workforce in acute care settings, such as hospitals.  Nurses have the power to influence the development of a culture of safety and support for all staff working in their organization.

Directions:

The manager of your unit has requested that the nursing staff address the complaints that have been made about staffing patterns.  The manager has made it clear that there is no money available to add any staff members or equipment.  The complaints the nursing staff has submitted are central to the change of shifts, there seems to be chaos and it is difficult for nurses to complete tasks and patient procedures before giving report to the oncoming shift.

The nurses also state they wish to have someone relieve them for a meal break.  The manager suggests that this is a problem that the nurses who are complaining should address and the manager believes all problems have a solution. The manager has given permission for the nurses to do anything they believe will help with the staffing, by changing shift times, etc.

The manager also suggested it would be acceptable to schedule one person to come in early to relieve people for their meal breaks and to help prepare the unit for shift change. It is clear to the nursing staff that the nurses cannot ask for more staff but rather better or different utilization of the current staff.

What possible changes can be made? Find at least one article not in your reading to support your ideas.
Use your unit with the usual number of patients and staff available in the unit to deliver care to develop your plan.
