CASE STUDY to use on Paper:
“Nehemiah Griegoon January 19, 2013, five people were found dead in their home in South Valley, New Mexico. Police found two rifles that were used to shoot five members of the Griego family, including three children. Nehemiah Griego, 15, was soon arrested in connection with the murders. he told police that he killed his sleeping mother, Sarah, around midnight and then killed his 9-year-old brother Zephaniah with the same .22-caliber rifle. hearing his sisters, 5-year-old Jael and 2-year-old Angelina, crying in their bedroom, Nehemiah shot both in the head. Their father, Greg Griego, was a former pastor at the local Calvary Church and a chaplain for the Albuquerque Fire Department. When he returned home around dawn from working a shift at a homeless shelter, Nehemiah shot him multiple times with a semi-automatic rifle. Nehemiah later claimed that he had been having suicidal and homicidal thoughts, that he had obtained the guns from his parents’ closet, and had planned to go on a shooting rampage, killing many others. Police uncovered text messages between Nehemiah and his 12-year-old girl-friend before the murders indicating that both youths had planned to kill their parents, but she backed out. in the texts, Nehemiah says that he is feeling insane. he sent the young girl a photo of his mother and brother after they were killed to prove he murdered his family, and then the two ex-changed sexual texts . Nehemiah said he killed his family because his parents were abusive. however, psychological profiling indicated that he suffered from mental health issues, including schizoaffective disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder, coupled with learning disabilities. “on october 16, 2015, Griego pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder and three counts of child abuse resulting in death. on February 11, 2016, Judge John J. Romero from the New mexico Children’s Court ruled that Nehemiah Griego is “amenable to treatment” and would be sentenced as a juvenile. Griego, now 19, will most likely be released from a youth detention facility when he turns 21, pending an appeal by the district attorney.”
Critical Thinking
Do you feel comfortable that a boy who killed five members of his family could be released after only five years in custody? Should he have been tried as an adult and sentenced to life in prison?”
