One or two-tailed? Using SPSS, determine the observed value for t: State your decision as to whether to reject the null hypothesis or not.

Lab: T-test

An investigator wants to explore the relationship between respondent sex and hours that they relax per day. The researcher predicts that men and women will differ in their amount of hours to relax per day.

Use the GSS 2018 dataset to help answer the following questions:

Address each of the following questions.

Using SPSS with the GSS dataset, conduct the following procedures:

Independent-samples t-test using SPSS

Click Analyze

Click on the Compare Means pull-down menu

Click on Independent-Samples T-Test. You should now see the Independent-Samples T Test window.

Move the variable HRSRELAX over to the Test Variable(s) box. The “test variable” is the dependent variable.

Move the variable SEX over to the Grouping Variable box. The “grouping variable” is the independent variable.

Click on the Define Groups button. There is where you tell SPSS which groups you want to compare. Enter a “1” for the MALE box and a “2” for the FEMALE box. Then click Continue.

Click OK back at the Independent-Samples T Test window.

Using the SPSS output window for an Independent-Samples T Test

In the Group Statistics box you get the means and standard deviations for both groups.

In the Independent-Samples T Test box, you get the results for the t-test. The row to look in is labeled “Equal variances assumed”.

Look in the section of the box labeled t-test for Equality of Means. Because the alpha level has been set at .05, all you have to do to see is the test is significant is to see is the significance level reported in the out is .05 or less. .010 is less than .05, so we can say that the test is significant.

What is your decision? Was the difference in means between Male and Female respondents significantly different?Do you reject the null hypothesis?

The sentence that we write as our conclusion is the following: Female respondents reported ____ hours relaxed when compared to male respondents (input group means here), t (df), p < or > .05.
