Analysis of Qantas Group Data
In your AVIA 1901 UNSW Moodle site under Individual Assignment you will find the dataset in Microsoft Excel entitled “Individual Assignment Data”. This dataset consists of semi-annual observations on a variety of Qantas and Jetstar operational and financial metrics, with the definition of each variable and its units of measurement, presented in row 1 of the Excel spreadsheet. You are to use that dataset to answer the following three questions.
Question 1. (10 Marks)
Calculate Qantas domestic RASK in Australian cents per ASK for the semi-annual period December 2011 to June 2021. Use this data to construct a line graph in Microsoft Excel and paste this graph into your answer word document.
You will be marked on the quality of the graph you present. Ensure you have properly labelled relevant axes.
Describe the seasonality in the data. Why might any seasonality come about? What measures could you use to quantify the seasonality in the data?
Discuss why Qantas domestic RASK may increase or decrease over time.
Discuss the impact of COVID-19 on the time series movements in Qantas Domestic RASK.
Question 2. (10 Marks)
Calculate Qantas international EBIT-level CASK in Australian cents per ASK for the semi-annual period December 2011 to December 2019. Use this data to construct a line graph in Microsoft Excel and paste this graph into your answer word document.
You will be marked on the quality of the graph you present. Ensure you have properly labelled relevant axes. Discuss what may be causing the movement over time in Qantas International CASK? You are encouraged to support your answer with other data sources.
Question 3. (5 Marks)
Find the following:
Qantas International EBIT-level cost per ASK and EBITDAR-level cost per ASK over the calendar annual period 2019. Note that this represents two sets of CASK estimates.
Find Qantas Domestic EBIT-level cost per ASK and EBITDAR-level cost per ASK over the calendar annual period 2019.
Find Jetstar Group EBIT-level cost per ASK and EBITDAR-level cost per ASK over the calendar annual period 2019.
Compare and contrast your estimates at (a) through to (c). You will be marked on the thoroughness of the research you give for this answer.
You will be tested on the type of graph that you select, and the quality of the graphs that you provide in this assignment. The graphs are expected to be completed in Excel and copied into a word document. You should go back over your notes during the in-class activities for tips on how to build an excellent graph in excel.
