Statistics for Psychology Test
Answer all the following questions using SPSS. After analyzing your data, you are to present (i) your SPSS results and (ii) a typed statement explaining your answer to each question.
You are reminded to exit SPSS after entering and analyzing the data for each problem. Restart the software and enter the data for the next problem on a fresh worksheet.
Before you upload each of the documents corresponding to the questions, make sure you name each document appropriately, for example Q1, Q2,… etc.
This test must be completed individually by each enrolled student.Post your responses to the test before the deadline expires.
1) A researcher did an experiment in which, she presented 50 words to one group of subjects at the rate of 2-secs per word; 4-secs per word to another group; for a third group the rate of 6-secs per word, and 10-sec per word to the last group.
The researcher was interested in studying whether the rate of presentation significantly influenced the recall of these words.
The researcher recorded the following mean number of words recalled:
2 sec intervals:
14, 11, 13, 12, 12, 10, 8, 9, 11, 10, 13, 11, 28, 22, 15, 21, 22, 14, 21, 14, 24, 12, 21, 22, 24, 23, 23, 34,
22,
4 sec intervals:
22, 14, 15, 16, 16, 17, 16, 12, 22, 20, 21, 13, 23, 33, 43, 12, 22, 24, 33, 22, 21, 34, 44, 21, 43, 22, 21,
19, 13
6 sec intervals:
22, 21, 21, 10, 11, 13, 11, 14, 12, 13, 10, 10, 45, 33, 44, 45, 43, 42, 23, 45, 21, 34, 22, 34, 41, 23, 22,
32, 34
10 sec intervals:
50, 45, 49, 44, 45, 43, 34, 44, 44, 45, 33, 43, 43, 32, 21, 24, 25, 34, 32, 43, 34, 31, 22, 32, 32, 44, 50,
45, 47
Determine from these data whether there was a statistically significant effect of presentation rates on recall of the words presented, and if so, what was the effect?
2) A researcher hypothesized that imagery instructions would improve the recall of words. In her experiment, she randomly assigned some participants to learn a list of words with the instruction to use imagery.
Participants in the second group were instructed to learn the words with rote memorization, whereas the third group used a combination of rote and imagery memorization strategies. The following represent the number of words recalled by each of the groups.
Imagery:
34, 32, 11, 34, 32, 29, 29, 28, 25, 27, 28, 39, 35, 32, 22, 21, 22, 33, 29, 24, 32, 33, 33, 22, 29, 33, 21
Rote:
12, 12, 18, 19, 20, 20, 19, 18, 21, 11, 13, 12, 10, 10, 11, 11, 12, 11, 12, 12, 11, 10, 12, 22, 14, 21, 11
Combination
32, 26, 17, 12, 13, 16, 12, 12, 11, 10, 12, 22, 14, 21, 11, 11, 10, 12, 13, 14, 23, 18, 12, 11, 9, 18, 19
Determine from the data whether imagery instructions were superior as compared to the other strategies.
