The Rogerian/Consensus-Building Method/Structure: Review RP: “Rogerian Argument” and “Communication: Its Blocking and Facilitation” but especially review the back of this sheet for more details and directions.
Directions:
Select one essay from Unit 3 that you mostly disagree with and write a Rogerian argument in response to the author.
Length: 3-½ to 5-½ pages (minimum 1,150 words—maximum 1,840 words, not counting the Works Cited page).
Logos/Pathos/Ethos Balance: Rogerian argument relies heavily on ethos—mutual respect, dignity, and high character—this is the essential component. Also use an appropriate balance of logic (logos) and emotion (pathos) in your essay, as always.
Grammar, Spelling, Mechanics, Vocabulary, Style: Use correct English grammar, spelling, and mechanics; evidence varied sentence structure, college-level vocabulary, and individual style in your writing.
Outside Research/Personal Critical Analysis Balance: Your argument backing should be about 60%-75% your own critical thinking and in-depth analysis, and about 25%-40% outside, credible research.
