Design a lesson plan of approximately 60-90mins.
The lesson plan itself is not assessed but should be carefully designed and put in the Appendix of the assignment.
The lesson plan can focus on any context and level. However, you should aim for identifying particular aspects (1-2) which the students need further development on. This can be linked to the curriculum e.g. the curriculum or syllabus states a more learner-focused approach. It should link to key objectives e.g. develop critical understanding, raising global language awareness, intercultural communication, more focus on speaking and communication etc. This should be made clear in the Introductory section of the assignment.
The lesson should focus on a combination of two areas e.g. reading and speaking, writing and culture, writing and listening, critical reading and grammar, critical reading and speaking etc. Of course other aspects can be integrated if necessary.
The structure of this assignment should involve the following:
Introduction (200 words): Short introduction of class, topic of lesson, context and aims of the lesson and study.
Part 1 (approx. 1600 words) –
Provide a rationale for the approach used in the lesson. Why it was chosen, what the key aims are, how this is demonstrated through the stages of the lesson and what key aspects are highlighted.
This should be supported from the literature and there should be clear evidence of critical reflection in light of theory. In doing this, you should consider input from the Lectures on communicative approaches, post-method era perspectives and task types.
More specifically it should respond to the following:
What approach is used
Justification of the approach. Why is it used? What does it offer in relation to the main objectives and needs/profile of students?
How is the approach justified in light of the literature. What key aspects does your lesson address which match with the approach?
Part 2 (approx. 1600 words)
This part should focus more specifically on the sequence of the lesson and in particular the tasks which have been developed. It should provide an analysis and critique of the tasks used, their aim and how this is supported by the relevant literature. For example, if you have chosen reading and speaking, you should also incorporate key principles of the teaching of these in light of the literature and how this is reflected in the tasks used.
Questions to be considered:
1. What are the tasks aiming to do?
2. How does the sequencing and specific aspect of tasks reflect current teaching perspectives in light of the literature?
3. How do the tasks reflect current understanding of teaching e.g. reading and writing (or what you have chosen to focus) in light of the literature?
Overall discussion and reflection (approx.200 words): This part should include your final observations of the lesson as a whole and general implications for teaching what you set out to plan in relation to the key aspects discussed in the Module about current perspectives on approaches to second language teaching.
