Early children education
Overview
This assessment task is designed to test your understanding of key research concepts, and your ability to apply these understandings to a practice-based research scenario.
Read the short scenario below, then, answer the questions using your weekly and suggested readings as a guide. There is no one right answer to the questions. We are asking you to propose answers that show your understanding of: the specific implications of choosing and using qualitative or quantitative methodologies and methods; and, the consistency between the methodology and the other choices you make for sample size, ethics, methods, participants and dissemination methods.
Set out each answer separately, with your answer set out under each question. IE Include Q1a text, then, your answer underneath; then Q2a text, then your answer underneath etc
Each answer should be in paragraph form, not a set of dot points. You must use references to scholarly sources – at a minimum from your textbook and the modules – to support your answers. You must use APA 7th referencing format throughout the assignment.
The word limit is 2500 words, excluding the references and headings above each answer. Use the weighting of the marks for each question as a guide to how long each answer should be.
Scenario
Gina works at a preschool in an area that includes many Australian Indigenous people in its community. Gina knows many of the Indigenous families have children are coming up to preschool age, but the families seem to not be enrolling their children in the preschool. Gina would like to find out why this is happening, and what she and her colleagues might do to encourage the Indigenous families to enrol their children in the preschool.
1. Research design
What methodology and research question could Gina use to guide her study? What features of the research question show that it matches the suggested methodology? (10 marks)
Think about what sort of information Gina would be trying to gather, and what methodology would best suit this. Then, think about how the type of research question that you suggest matches the methodology.
Consult Module 2, 3, 4 and 5 readings.
Using the question you have suggested above, what sampling strategy would be appropriate? What groups of people would you recruit to take part, and why? (10 marks)
Think about how the sampling strategy connects to your chosen methodology and type of research question.
Consult Module 5 readings.
How will you involve children in the research you are suggesting? Explain your rationale for this choice (5 marks)
Consult Module 6 readings.
2. Research methods and ethics
What data collection methods could Gina use to gather information to research the question you suggested above? Explain what makes these method/s appropriate for investigating Gina’s research question. (5 marks)
Consult Modules 3-5.
Suggest two ethical issue that Gina will need to consider as she plans and undertakes her study. Explain why these are important, with reference to the National Standard on Ethical Conduct of Human Research (2018) and Guidelines for Ethical Research in Australian Indigenous Studies (2017). (10 marks)
Consult Module 7 readings.
Suggest one way Gina could share the findings with people who are interested in this study? (5 marks)
Consider what way of sharing findings is appropriate to the overall topic of the study, who the participants were and the type of findings that the study will generate.
Consult Module 10 readings.
